Canadian lyric soprano Julia Johnstone, praised for her “strong and rich” voice as well as her “fine dramatic sense,” most recently assistant directed La Traviata for PASS Artist Residency , as well as covered the role of Violetta. She starred as Despina with the Utah Valley Operafest. She was also a featured soloist in the Heroes and Heroines concert at Opera America’s Scorca Hall in New York City. Other recent roles include Mrs. Paskova in Cunning Little Vixen under the baton of Kirk Severtson. Ms. Johnstone was featured in the Canadian premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s The Passenger, contributing to the “notably haunting atmospheric laments,” of the groundbreaking piece. Past European performances include Zweite Dame (Die Zauberflöte) in the Czech Republic at Krusnohorske Divadlo under conductor Norbert Baxa with the North Czech Philharmonic. Other performances include Frasquita (Carmen) with Vancouver Opera Orchestra at the historic Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival under the baton of Leslie Dala. At the Chan Center for the Performing Arts in British Columbia, she sang Madama Cortese in Il Viaggio a Reims under the musical direction of David Agler. Ms. Johnstone was the featured guest artist at Remembrance Day Ceremonies in her hometown of Coquitlam, British Columbia. As a Performing Arts BC Provincial Festival competitor, she won first place for National Vocal Variety, and twice won second place for Senior National Classical Voice two consecutive years in a row. Ms. Johnstone makes her home in New York City, where she is an active recitalist and teacher. In Fall 2024 she will help produce soprano Lindsay Rider’s performance at Merkin Hall, as well as make her debut with The Cecilia Chorus of New York at Carnegie Hall.
